The latest hobbit movie used alot of programs to get the epic battle and destruction sequences to unfold. The battle sequences were done with two different programs one to simulate the battles and one to create the armies. The laketown scene however was much more complex in programming using rigid body animators along with a multitude of particle and wind simulations t create the fire from Smaug and the destroying houses.
Wow, all these effects but still no awards. I seriously wonder how many computer it took to run all the simulations simultaneously because if it's less than 100 they better be on the level of HAL-9000. It's crazy how they did this stuff, merging simulations and programs together to make this happen, it must have ben hard but i guess in the long run it was worth it for the outcome.
